Local Housing Allowance is what Housing Benefit is known as for people who rent in the private rented sector.
With Local Housing Allowance, London is split into 16 Zones. Each zone has specific amounts that you can be paid to rent a property. (ie: there is a standard amount for renting a room, renting a one bed flat etc…). You can find out how much rent you can offer a landlord by looking up how much local housing allowance you can get for a property in a particular area.
To find out how much rent you can offer a landlord (how much Local Housing Allowance you are entitled to) or to find out more about local housing allowance, visit this web site:
http://lha-direct.therentservice.gov.uk/
On this website you can enter your area either by post code or borough and the type of property you rent. It will then tell you the amount of local housing allowance you are entitled to.
It is important to note that Local Housing Allowance is likely to be paid directly into your bank account rather than directly to your landlord. Real Lettings strongly recommend that you open a basic bank account for your local housing allowance to be paid into. You can then set up a direct debit to Real Lettings from this account to pay your rent. This will avoid your rent being paid into your personal account and will help you keep on top of your finances. Real Lettings will be able to support you to open an account and also to set up a direct debit to your landlord.
If you feel you are unable to manage your Local Housing Allowance payments it may be possible to get it paid direct to Real Lettings. If you would like help with this please contact your Resettlement Worker
